"We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives; to promote children’s interest and understanding about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes."

Geography News!

Digimaps Club

Our digimap leaders from each class attend a weekly club to develop their knowledge and skills. Each week they learn a new skill, which they teach their class when they return to the classroom. They champion the use of digimaps and support their peers when they are using and developing their mapping skills in lessons.

Mapping and Fieldwork

We regularly develop our important geographical skills such as using maps and atlases, locational and directional language, using aerial photographs, fieldwork and enquiry linked to our topic. Year 2 and Year 5 had a live zoom lesson with a cartographer who has made maps for the Queen!

Forest School

We create an environment from an early age where our children are able to connect with nature, as we believe it is essential for physical and mental wellbeing, and promoting an appreciation for protecting and valuing nature. We provide opportunities for every child to take part in forest school sessions. The children take part in a range of outdoor learning and nature activities such as willow weaving, nature crafts, gardening, natural art ideas, simple tool use and so much more. Forest school is child led, so they follow the children’s interests each week to develop intrinsic motivation. They finish each session with some campfire cooking with foods such as marshmallows, popcorn, nettle crisps and more.

Global Citizens

Our children understand that sustainability is about improving quality of life, without damaging the life for future generations. Our curriculum and enrichment engage pupils in their world, often spurring them into action.

We continue to educate children about the sustainable development goals. We have introduced a Global Citizen award for children, which is awarded in assembly on Monday. The children can earn the Global Citizen award by being ‘agents of change’ in the community or wider area. Our amazing children have been litter picking, creating their own wet play games with recycled materials, raising money for charity and even donating their pocket money to the homeless.

In addition to this, our STEM week focused on the Sustainable Development Goals. Each day had a theme, focusing on one or two sustainable development goals. The children had to complete a challenge such as bringing a zero waste lunchbox, which encouraged them to be agents of change and take action.

Meet Our Eco Team

Our Eco Team are a group of children who are passionate about looking after our environment. They have attended Eco Conferences and lead initiatives in school to encourage other children to live sustainably. Thanks to their hard work, we proudly achieved the Eco Schools award.

Year 6 Grasmere and London Trip

As part of their fieldwork studies, Year 6 visit Grasmere to climb Silver How, a fantastic achievement for all! While they are there, they compared the physical and human features to Orrell and in Summer Term they do the same during their trip to London.

Reindeer Hunt

In Autumn Term Year 5 and Year 6 prepared for Christmas by going on a reindeer hunt with their buddies from Nursery and Reception. They had to work together and use their map reading skills to find the reindeers who were plotted on the map.

Spring Hunt

Our Digimap leaders organised a spring hunt for the whole school to take part in. We all used our map reading skills to search the school grounds to find all the points marked on the map. It was a huge success and as you can see by our happy faces, we really enjoyed ourselves!

International Day

Year 2 took part in International Day at the end of their Around the World topic. After learning about the different continents, they used their passports to visit different countries around the world and immerse themselves in the country’s culture.
